In April, I challenged myself to post one black and white photo a day. No theme — just what caught my eye.
They were all taken while walking or driving through Los Angeles.
-
Fashion District, Los Angeles
This scene stood out, as he was just standing there, not making a move to cross the street. There’s something eerie in the motion.
-
East Los Angeles
I just loved the brightness of the tarp over the car, paired with the simplicity of the single tiny cloud in the otherwise blue sky. The palm tree adds to the singular look of the scene.
-
East Los Angeles
There was no person in sight who could have propped the umbrella to the back of the van like that, which turned this into something forgotten and almost lonely.
-
Arts District, Los Angeles
The tarp is being blown open by the wind coming through the ever open window. The light changed by the second with each movement, and I loved how more light illuminated more detail.
-
East Los Angeles
So many arrows pointing in different directions and the arches as a significant architectural feature caught my eye. It looks abandoned and busy at the same time.
-
East Los Angeles
I couldn’t be sure if this man is selling something, waiting for someone or simply hanging out in this peculiar spot. His hat stood out against the modernity of the gas station and the sky in the back.
-
Arts District, Los Angeles
The arches of the 6th Street Viaduct are massive concrete blocks and if viewed from the right angle, the viewpoint almost gets otherworldly with the cloud in the background. Where are we?

Arts District, Los Angeles
This is one of those photos that I would have captured in color just as much, but the chrome of the trailer with the stark shadow in the foreground make this work on a different level than in color.

Arts District, Los Angeles
One of those moments where things fall into place. The shoes can signify different things, but can be meant as a memorial or markings of gang territory. The attack helicopters in the background and no visible humans make this scene really eerie.

Downtown Los Angeles
I loved the shadows in this scene on a late afternoon. Everything is tinted in a different shade of black and the looming Storage facility in the background gives it an extra weird feeling. The tree adds a lot of texture and the power pole frames it beautifully.
